Hunting for Cursed Treasure

Have you ever watched “The Curse of Oak Island”?

It is a History Channel reality tv show about a pair of brothers who are searching for the cursed treasure of Oak Island, which happens to be in Nova Scotia.

While “The Curse of Oak Island” is a long running show. (I think they just finished season ten?) I learned about Oak Island and its fabled treasure when my eldest son had to do a school report and picked the Oak Island treasure as his topic many years ago and before the television show started.

For several years, each time my husband and I drove down the south shore of Nova Scotia (It’s a beautiful drive if you take the scenic route), I wondered what the island looked like. In August 2019, we decided to stop during our trip down the south shore to visit some historic homes and other museums. (My other pen name writes historical romance 🙂 )

As I said, we had driven past the turn off for the island many times, but this was the first time we decided to cross the causeway (bottom right pic in the header image) and take a tour of the interpretive center.

In the interpretive center, there are several displays of items found in the search for the treasure and information about some of the history of treasure hunting that has taken place on the island over the years and was well-worth the stop.

The actual curse of Oak Island is said to have originated many years ago and states that “seven men will die before the treasure is found.” So far, six men have died in the pursuit of the treasure.

What the treasure is is not actually known, but there are several theories, including pirate treasure, the crown jewels of France, the contents of a pay ship, manuscripts of Francis Bacon, and on and on. You can read more about them at this website.

I haven’t watched the show in some time, which means I am not up to date on the discoveries or plans for the future. However, I have a good friend (and fellow author) who watches it regularly. So, while we were at the gift shop (inside the interpretive center, top left pic), I made sure to pick up a memento of my trip to send to her.

Maybe this summer, when my husband finally gets his vacation in August, we’ll take a drive down the south shore again and wave at the sign that points to Oak Island as we drive past.
